Please join us on Saturday, September 6, 2025 for an afternoon workshop and evening dance with acclaimed caller Gene Murrow. Live music is being provided by Mike Dunn on fiddle and Rya Martin on keyboard.
Gene is both a caller and a musician, and has shared his love for English Country Dance not just here in the US but in many countries around the world. Gene approaches the English country dance as a medium in which dancers and musicians alike participate in the realization of works of art. His dance workshops strive to make their richness of structure, musical form, texture, and affect enjoyable and appreciated by dancers of all abilities
Pre-registration will be required. Please mail in your payment with the paper registration form found on the flyer below, or reserve your spot with the online registration form.
In advance of the Saturday workshop, Mr. Murrow has offered to share an after dinner presentation entitled The Sublime Marriage of English Dance and Music. Meet up with your dance friends and acquaintances at a potluck dinner ( bring a dish!) with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. and dinner served around 6:30 pm. Please RSVP for the potluck now and you can let us know what you are bringing later. This event is free.
The Friday potluck and presentation is FREE, begins at 6 pm, and is being held on the north side of Richmond at the Belmont Recreation Center, 1600 Hilliard Road, Richmond, VA 23228.
The Saturday afternoon workshop runs from 1:30-4:30pm and the evening dance from 6:30-9:30pm. The cost is $15 per individual session or $25 for the whole day. The two hour break between the sessions can be used to go out to dinner at a local restaurant. Both Saturday sessions are in the far west end of Richmond at the Deep Run Recreation Center, 9900 Ridgefield Parkway, Henrico, VA 23233.
Gene Murrow has been an English country dancer and musician since 1965, and has taught and called at clubs, workshops, festivals, and balls throughout the United States as well as England, Scotland, Ireland, Europe, and Japan. Gene approaches the English country dance as a medium in which dancers and musicians alike participate in the realization of works of art. His dance workshops strive to make their richness of structure, musical form, texture, and affect enjoyable and appreciated by dancers of all abilities.
The Williamsburg-Richmond dance workshop series is designed to help us become better dancers by working on technique and expanding our repertoire. The Workshops are sponsored jointly by the Williamsburg Heritage Dancers and the Colonial Dance Club of Richmond with support from Henrico County Parks and Recs. These events are open to all experience levels, but will be much more pleasant if you have had a few English Dance sessions previously. Our callers typically lead both modern and historic dances in the workshop. Dress is casual modern with comfortable shoes that you can dance in.
Our recent workshops have been led by Bruce Hamilton in 2024, David Millstone in 2023, Joanna Reiner Wilkinson in 2022, Robin Hayden in 2019, and Scott Higgs in 2018.
